I love Grohl, I just always thought they were lacking on what they could have been. For a guy who loves the music he does and came from such a brilliant band (the DC punk band Scream), I was always let down by the lack of PUNCH I got out of Foo.

Interesting to know that about Taylor. I always wondered what the extent of his and Grohl's relationship was. They almost come across as a couple. He had a drug problem, eh? I guess working with Alanis will do that to anybody.

<font size="4" face="Arial">Okay you're forgiven...haha. Really I think they kick ass on a lot of songs. Stacked Actors totally kicked ass live. You need to see them live, they are really quite heavy. There was a circle pit of all things going right in the throng of the crowd throughout the whole show.

I never saw or heard Scream, so I can't compare. I think though, that Grohl had a lot more to do with Nirvana than people realize...or maybe not, it's hard to say.

I think Grohl being a drummer really appreciates Hawkins skill and probably loves playing with him.
Him and Grohl do seem very chummy. When Hawkins sang the song and played guitar near the end of the set, Grohl was bashing the shit out of his drums. Grohl broke something, kick pedal I think. Hawkins was laughing saying "are you breaking my shit up man, what the fuck" when he went back to the kit. Then Hawkins at a couple of songs would go nuts and do some hyper drum solo shit. Grohl and the others would let him go nuts and be totally showcased. I think for Grohl, it's like "I picked this guy, Isn't he great"

I remember in one of my bands where I sang and played, I wanted to just sing. We tried out drummers, but me being picky as shit when it comes to that, I couldn't find anyone that I liked or measured up. If I had of , I would have been ecstatic.

Let's be fair to Krist Novaselic, the stuff he was doing wouldn't have been big even if it had Elvis singing with Hendrix on guitar and Bonham on drums. It just wasn't meant to be commercially successful.

I'll try to get you some Scream. They were a great band that has been all but forgotten. I believe he only played on their "Censorship" album though.

I think it's a good tune...very tuneful and radio friendly. Not bad, but I will be truthful about one thing...Tommy can sing, which is something Vince can't do. [img]graemlins/thumbs_up.gif[/img]

<font size="4" face="Arial">Hmm....I'd have to strongly disagree with you there. Dave Grohl is an awesome, solid style drummer ala T.Lee and a very competent guitarist and songwriter in my opinion. Taylor Hawkins is a powerhouse of a drummer and ranks currently of one of my favs out there today. Shiflett and Mendell are both very competent players as well.

Hawkins is also releasing a sold CD of his own tunes where he's playing guitar and sings.

Grohl has a lot of respect for Hawkins as well. He helped him and stuck by him while Hawkins was having drug problems. He showcases him a lot during the live show. Hawkins sings a song on the new Foo's CD also.

I don't really grasp how you think the attitude outweighs musicianship. I think the Foos are one of the better rock bands out there today as far as songwriting goes. Well written songs, top notch live show, and guys who are having fun doing it without having to try to be cool.

Grohl played on QOTSA breakthrough CD, played on NIN nails new CD and is highly respected by a lot of musicians. In "No one knows" on the QOTSA CD, he does an amazing flam triplet fill, that is very difficult to do at that speed. When I saw QOTSA live, the touring drummer jammed out on that fill and did something easier. Both a friend and I were watching the guy to see if he could pull off and he couldn't.

I have to disagree with you about the FF Carl. You only have to look at Kris Novoselics post Nirvana musical careeer to see that being in Nirvana was no guarantee of success. I totally agree that Grohl is a major talent and a very accomplished alround player. I love his stuff. The QotSA album contribution is awasome and, as Hazardous points out, really quite muso. Lenni bedlam makes the point about a relacing a shit slick player with someone who was less complished but ultimately better for his band.

I think Carl and I have becoming at this from different perceptions of the word Talent. Reading the last few posts it has dawned just how broad a word this is to use. It covers a whole host of things. I reference to Grohl, he is a very techincal player when he wants to be ( QotSA)and that is talent, no question about it. However I think the truest mark of TALENT
is knowing when not to over play just becuase you can. To my way of seeing things I think that is the defining factor of TALENT.

Well, like I said about Krist, his stuff was hardly radio friendly. He wasn't trying to be commercially successful, as much as he was trying to do something he had always wanted to do. Grohl was out to be a commercial success and prove he could do it without Kurt. Grohl came out of Punk bands and he claims stuff like Black Sabbath's "Mob Rules" is his favorite album, with Dio being his favorite vocalist. I don't really see or hear any of those influences in 90% of what Foo Fighters have done. Sure, they have their ROCKING songs...but so did Air Supply.

We might actually be coming at this from different angles, and we probably DO agree on this whole damn thing in the long run. We are also probably just banging heads against the walls, but I will tell you this, this is by far the best damn "conversation" I have had on this site in fucking YEARS! Thanks for it gang! I think where we both came in to this differently was that I was just taking it that your use of the word "talent" meant the Malmsteen types of critters who give you a million flashy guitar run, but don't do shit otherwise.

Anyone not working 9 to 5 talented or not I have respect for. There is no solution, its a matter of perspective, if it sounds good to the individual then you will defend it.

I producer called Colin Richardson, once said to me "Its not always what you play, it is the space you leave that makes the song" It always struck a chord with me and I have always had a suspicion of, to use you example, Malmsteen and the like, becuase I don not think that pure technical skill makes you a great musician. Not always but often. yeah ,a good constructively critical forum this has turned out to be.
